Netflix's Marvel Universe grew a little bit larger when Mike Colter made his debut as Luke Cage during a trailer released during Comic-con 2016 on Thursday.
The release follows the budding Netflix tradition of taking lesser-known superheroes and expanding their stories into dramatic hits. With the third season of Daredevil looming on the horizon, the trend is showing no signs of slowing down.
Luke Cage, also known as Power Man, is blessed with unbreakable skin and superhuman strength after being imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. The character breaks ranks from his Marvel colleagues by trading finesse for sheer brutality and passion in his pursuit to clean up the streets of Harlem.
Luke Cage Brings The Grit Of The Comic To Life
The bleak trailer featured at Comic-con is not actor Mike Colter's first time portraying the character. Colter was featured in the first Season of Jessica Jones, a live-action television series which follows the life of a fellow Marvel hero of the same name.
In the Marvel Universe, Luke Cage develops a romantic relationship with Jones, and later marries her. But in the trailer shown at Comic-con, there is no trace of romance to be seen. Instead, fans are treated to the same intimate combat sequences that make Daredevil a smashing success.
Appropriately set to Ol' Dirty Bastard's "Shimmy Shimmy Ya", the teaser opens with Luke Cage thinking about what he can do to help a community beset by crime. The next thing viewers know, Cage is swatting villains away like flies, at one point using his colossal strength to pull one opponent through a wall before finishing him.
It will be interesting to see what sort of villains Luke Cage will face in the upcoming series, and what will make them formidable enough to stop a hero with unbreakable skin. Marvel fans have a lot to look forward to when all episodes premier on Netflix in September.
